Saturday Snapshots #1

Cat-herb-pots

My friend Inge’s cat, peering suspiciously at us from behind the herb pots –  August 2008

This photo is the first in a series called Saturday Snapshots which I hope to make a weekly feature.  I find that I have loads of beautiful non-food photos that I’d like to share with you but never get the chance, so in the tradition of my friends Ilva (who regularly posts her gorgeous and inspiring non-food photos) and Kalyn (who recently started a Friday Night Photo feature to improve her photography), I have started Saturday Snapshots.  Think of it as something beautiful to look at every week over your Saturday morning coffee 🙂

Saturday Snapshots is a series of non-food photographs published every Saturday on CookSister.  Previously featured photographs can be viewed on the Saturday Snapshots archive pages. Many photos featured in Saturday Snapshots are available to buy as high-quality greeting cards or prints in my RedBubble store.

What a beautiful picture! I wish I was so talented, though the amazing photos on blogs out there are encouraging me to try a bit harder anyway. I look forward to seeing more of this series (especially if they have cats in them!)

I’m intrigued by your blog name.
My husband is South African and when I first visited SA (Cape Town), he introduced me with cook sister. Apparently its his favorite snack, and off course you can only get it in SA. Anyway, he missed it so much, so his cousin bought a few for him. Back home, I tried to make it and off course failed! If I only knew that this type of snack/cookie, you only leave it to the professional to make it. I’m not sure weather its true, but according to his cousin, no body really make cook sister at home. Cheers.

I was too excited to talk about cook sister, I forgot that I was going to make a comment about the beautiful cat behind the herb pots. Nice photo!

Jeanne, Blue thouroughly approves of her closeup Ms. De Mille. Dakota would love a copy too to put in her room. Kid and kitty both currently ensconced on the sofa watching the dog whisperer.

CELEBRATE. So the fireworks are over, the champag CELEBRATE.

So the fireworks are over, the champagne is finished and the leftovers are all eaten. We are one week into 2023 and I have had some time to think about what my intent is for the year.

In 2022 my brother had a life saving kidney transplant. Since the operation, he has had a Peanuts cartoon as his WhatsApp profile pic, where Charlie Brown and Snoopy are sitting on a pier talking. Charlie says “Some day, we all die Snoopy.” And Snoopy replies: “Yes - but every other day, we will live.”

Waking up in the morning is a gift, every day, and it is so easy to forget this. The last few years have been difficult for so many people and the coming year promises its own challenges. But every day that we don’t die is a day to live, to celebrate life in some small way.

So my intention in 2023 is to celebrate. Celebrate our achievements however small. Celebrate our friends and family. Celebrate small things. Celebrate life.

Did you make any resolutions or goals for 2023? I would love to hear them in the comments! Wishing you all the very best for 2023 🥂
Happy new year, everyone! Here are some scenes fro Happy new year, everyone! Here are some scenes from last night with friends in Deptford. My deconstructed avocado ritz; @twinkleparkstephen ‘s bobitie; Giles’ Ottolenghi tomato salad; and Jean’s clementine trifle - and the London night sky ablaze with fireworks! How did you spend your evening? 🥂🎇🎆
Merry Christmas to all those celebrating - I hope Merry Christmas to all those celebrating - I hope your day was merry and bright, filled with family, friends and love 🎄🥂. Mine was spent alone at home - my choice and the result of a combination of Covid (not mine!) and rail strikes 🤦‍♀️ but very relaxing and indulgent!

Hot smoked salmon, cream cheese and chives wrapped in cold smoked salmon in a ramekin. Looking for a brilliant biryani near Marble Arch? Looking for a brilliant biryani near Marble Arch? I recently enjoyed a feast at Biryani Kebab Chai @bkc.restaurant on Edgeware Road, including wonderful sweet, spicy and crunchy papri chaat; smoky burrah lamb kebab; galouti lamb patties; juicy chaap chicken thigh kebab; spicy chapli chicken patties; and the surprising vegetarian dahi ke patties made of yoghurt! We also tried the chicken and soya biryanis, both with incredibly fluffy and delicately spiced rice. You can get their biryanis as a 1kg takeaway, served in a beautiful branded clay pot that serves 3-4 people, for about £30. Bargain! We also took home a sample of their desserts, including a fragrant and delicious kheer rice pudding. If you are in the Marble Arch area, get yourself to BKC! #invited #bkcrestaurants

RIP HRH Queen Elizabeth II - a loss of one of the RIP HRH Queen Elizabeth II - a loss of one of the constants in the world; certainly for my generation. I went to see the floral tributes in Green Park this weekend and they were truly overwhelming - even more so the cards with personal messages. The funeral service on TV this morning is the kind of somber pageantry that only the British can truly pull off. Think what you will of the monarchy; the Queen dedicated her life to the service of her country, under the microscope of public scrutiny, and provided a constant anchor in a changing world. We will not see the like of her again.
