Announcing the July Monthly Mingle – a Taste of Yellow for Barbara

by Jeanne Horak on July 7, 2012 39 Comments in Monthly Mingle

Monthly Mingle logo July 2012

In September 2006, Barbara Harris of Winos and Foodies was challenged to complete a meme detailing “5 things to eat before you die”. The last on her list was the following:

“My 87th Birthday Cake – I used to say I wanted to live until I’m 100 but I’ll settle for 87.”

This was particularly poignant because in 2004 Barbara was diagnosed with cancer, a diagnosis which instantly changed her life forever and altered her long-term horizons.  If you have been on the internet over the past week, you would know by now that Barbara never did get to eat that cake.  On 29 June, Barbara lost her long battle with cancer and the food blogginging sky lost one of its most inspirational stars.  Barbara started her blog Winos and Foodies in January 2005, less than a year after I started my own blog, and was soon known by all who ran across her online as kind, funny, talented, gentle, brave and inspirational.  She was open about the hardships and indignities imposed by her disease, but at the same time she remained reolutely optimistic, always planning for and looking forward to foodie adventures when her latest treatment regime ended.

One of Barbara’s most lasting online legacies was the creation of the LiveStrong with a Taste of Yellow event in 2007.  This yellow-themed event co-incided each year with LiveStrong Day, created bycancer survivor Lance Armstrong’s LiveStrong Foundation to raise awareness of cancer. Each year, bloggers from around the globe shared yellow recipes and stories of loved ones who were fighting cancer – or who had lost the battle. As a tribute to Barbara’s memory, we have decided that this month’s Monthly Mingle event (created by Meeta of What’s for Lunch, Honey?) will be dedicated to Barbara’s memory, and that the theme will be A Taste of Yellow.

Here are the rules:

1. Make or bake something yellow (sweet or savoury), or something using yellow ingredients. Let your imagination run wild: lemons, yellow peppers, yellow plums, yellow carrots, yellow squash – the possibilities are endless!

2. Post the dish together with any cancer stories or memories of Barbara on your blog between the 1 July and 6 August 20012. Older posts will not be accepted. Please also note that your post should be prepared exclusively for thre Monthly Mingle and should not be submitted to any other events.

3. Please link your post to this announcement and to Meeta’s Monthly Mingle page. Use of the lovely logo Meeta designed is optional in your Monthly Mingle post.

4. Please submit your entries before midnight (your time) of the 6 August 2012 by sending me an e-mail (emailcooksister AT gmail DOT com) containing the following:

  • “Monthly Mingle entry” in the subject line
  • Your name
  • Your blog name and URL
  • Your location (just the country or city is sufficient)
  • The name of the dish
  • The URL of the post in which the dish appears
  • Please attach a photo of the dish (max 500 pix wide) to your e-mail

I look forward to sharing your dishes and your stories – let’s make this the biggest Monthly Mingle ever as we eat yellow one more time, for Barbara.

More deliciousness for you!

I’m a fairly new blogger and didn’t ‘know’ Barbara but will cook something yellow in her memory – and that of RL friends.
One of the really good things I’ve found about the blogging community is how supportive and friendly folk are – so it’s time to step up and join in.

    Jeanne,
Thank you for holding this event, I have no idea with blogging, that was Barbara’s domain. (no pun intended).
We are amazed by the outpouring of support and also such praise of Barbara, she would be so humbled.
Let us hope that this year is the best.
    Kind regards
    Bryan Harris

I’m so glad you are doing this in memory of Barbara – she made a lasting impact and had a serenity, warmth and generosity which touched everyone who met her…in my case only on line.
I did a round-up on Pinterest after the 2010 event where she asked that the yellow food was in a heart shape too. I’m sharing it here for inspiration and in Barbara’s memory http://pinterest.com/mycustardpie/a-taste-of-yellow-livestrong/

I also do not know her but probably every one of our lives has been touched by cancer in some way or through someone we know and/or love. This is such a beautiful way to pay tribute to a person who meant so much to many.

I never knew Barbara personally although I had heard her name across the blogosphere a couple of times. I will for sure be joining in the Mingle this month, in fact I have already made the dish so it is just now writing the post..
I think most people have had to deal with cancer at some point in their lives and I am no exception… Great initiative to make this a yellow Mingle!

How incredible that Barbara touched so many lives.. I didn’t have the honor of “friending” through blogs, but learned about her presence through Sally, your blog and one other. She would be smiling in heaven to know that you have written these kind words. I can’t wait to follow your blog so I can join in next year:) xx Smidge

My favourites include @lukejerramartist ‘s Floating Earth; Tom Lambert’s Out of the Dark; Fluorescent Firs; Toroid by This is Loop; and the surreal and mesmerising Anima by MEATS - a tunnel filled with hundreds of thin optical fibre lights that change colour and move in the breeze 😍

Have you been to Winter Lights? What was your favourite?
“When we look down at the Earth from space, we s “When we look down at the Earth from space, we see this amazing, indescribably beautiful planet. It looks like a living, breathing organism. But it also, at the same time, looks extremely fragile.” - International Space Station astronaut Ron Garamond

To experience the “overview effect” (a phenomenon experienced by astronauts viewing the earth from space), head down to Canary Wharf in the London docklands this week where you can see @lukejerramartist ‘s beautiful Floating Earth installation as part of the Winter Lights event.

This giant 10m diameter installation is created using high resolution NASA images to create a floating scale model of the Earth, lit from within so that it glows from its current home on the Middle Dock, surrounded by the headquarters of international banking and finance corporations.

The artist hopes that viewed in this context, the installation will make visitors and the bankers working in surrounding buildings question how their money in savings and pensions is invested, and whether investments can be greener.

Aside from being a thought provoking piece, it is also mesmerising and surreally beautiful, so make sure you visit the free Winter Lights event before ends on Saturday 28 Jan.

CELEBRATE. So the fireworks are over, the champag CELEBRATE.

So the fireworks are over, the champagne is finished and the leftovers are all eaten. We are one week into 2023 and I have had some time to think about what my intent is for the year.

In 2022 my brother had a life saving kidney transplant. Since the operation, he has had a Peanuts cartoon as his WhatsApp profile pic, where Charlie Brown and Snoopy are sitting on a pier talking. Charlie says “Some day, we all die Snoopy.” And Snoopy replies: “Yes - but every other day, we will live.”

Waking up in the morning is a gift, every day, and it is so easy to forget this. The last few years have been difficult for so many people and the coming year promises its own challenges. But every day that we don’t die is a day to live, to celebrate life in some small way.

So my intention in 2023 is to celebrate. Celebrate our achievements however small. Celebrate our friends and family. Celebrate small things. Celebrate life.

Did you make any resolutions or goals for 2023? I would love to hear them in the comments! Wishing you all the very best for 2023 🥂
