Saturday Snapshots #313

Maman-Louise-Bourgeois-Bilbao

Maman by Louise Bourgeois – Guggenheim Bilbao, April 2018

Maman was made for the opening of Tate Modern in May 2000 as part of Louise Bourgeois’s commission for the Turbine Hall, the massive central space of the museum. An edition of six bronze casts was created subsequent to Tate’s original steel version. At almost 9 meters tall, Maman is one of the most ambitious of a series of sculptures by Bourgeois that take as their subject the spider, a motif intended as a tribute to her mother, who was a weaver.  I encountered this particular bronze cast in Bilbao in April, where Frank Gehry’s magnificent Guggenheim Bilbao provides a suitably dramatic backdrop.
