Saturday Snapshots #191

Zulu wedding beads, Greenmarket Square, Cape Town – April 2012

Greenmarket Square is a cobbled square built in Cape Town in 1696 when a municipal guard house was erected there. In 1761, the guard house was demolished and the Old Town House built in the site, which was used as the city hall for a period. Near the centre of the square is a hand-operated pump used to bring clean water to the surface from an underground river that runs beneath the city.  Over the years, the square has served as a slave market, a vegetable market, a parking lot and latterly, an informal flea market trading mainly in African souvenirs, crafts and curios. Jostling for space among the wooden giraffes and West African masks, these colourful Zulu beaded necklaces caught my eye.
