Regents Canal towpath, London – October 2010

The Regent’s Canal is a canal which links Limehouse Basin on the Thames to the Paddington branch of the Grand Union Canal in North London.  It provides many kilometres relatively tranquil towpath walking or cycling in the middle of a city, and some quintessentially London views like this one.   The structure on the left is a fas holder – a large container where natural gas is stored almost at atmospheric pressure and at ambient temperature.  The clever design means that the volume of the container follows the quantity of stored gas (in other words it expands upward as it is filled with more gas).  But it is their delicate Victorian metal frames silhouetted against the sky that have come to symbolise London to me.
