Head of the Charles Regatta – Boston, October 2008
The Head of the Charles Regatta is a rowing race which takes place on the penultimate complete weekend in October each year. Started in 1965, the race takes place on the Charles River which separates Cambridge and Boston, Massachusetts. The course is 3.2 miles long, passes under 6 bridges, and is renowned for being challenging for crews to navigate without penalty or incident. It is the largest 2-day regatta in the world, attracting over 300,000 visitors to watch 8,000 athletes in around 1750 boats compete in 56 events. One of the 8,000 in 2008 was my husband together with his London rowing crew, rowing in a boat loaned to them by Saugatuck Rowing Club.
For me, the best thing about the race was its gorgeous setting – even if men in lycra in boats does not interest you (could this be?!), you can spend a lovely day admiring the vivid autumn colours along the riverbank, as I did.
