Saturday Snapshots #50

Burano jewellery

Burano – July 2009

There’s more to Venice than just the Grand Canal and Piazza San Marco.  There are in fact loads of islands in the Venice lagoon that you can reach either by vaporetto or water taxi, from tiny to large.  The Lido is one of the most famous and it is here where Venetians can visit the beach and take a dip in the Adriatic.  Murano is the island of glassblowers; and Burano is the lace-making island.  But even if lace is not to your taste, Burano is a feast for the eyes with every house painted a different ice-cream colour to its neighbour, and with endless little canals to reflect the ice-cream sundae streets.  And if that’s not enough, there are more precariously leaning campaniles than Pisa could ever dream of :)Here, glass beads for nearby Murano compete with the technicolour houses of Burano.
